Curio Theatre Camp - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What does a day at Curio Theatre Camp look like?
A: The camp day begins promptly at 9:30am with an All Camp meeting to discuss announcements, play warm-up games, and prepare for the day at hand. Generally, our camp serves 30 campers in each two-week session. Your camper will be divided into a core group based on age/school year. Each day, your camper's group will cycle through specialties which may include Acting, Voice/Speech, Theatrical Design, Playwriting, Movement/Dance, and Improv/Theatre Games, among others. As the session progresses, your camper's group will begin developing and rehearsing their Showcase performance piece which will be performed for free to the public on the final day of camp at 2pm.
Q: Who are the Camp Counselors?
A: Curio Theatre Camp features professional theatre artists/educators who hold degrees in a related field and live/work in the Greater Philadelphia area. Many of our staff are long-standing Curio company members committed to the future of our education wing. Each staff member who works with your camper has passed all necessary background checks in accordance to state and federal law. While your camper will have two counselors who lead their core age group, they will interact with all camp counselors to gain exposure to various theatrical disciplines. All counselors are extensively trained in matters of Mandated Reporting, acceptable classroom management, and Bathroom Policy to ensure the safety and well-being of all.
Q: Is an audition required to attend Curio Camp?
A: Nope! We gladly accept campers of all backgrounds and experience levels! We explore numerous aspects of stagecraft (not just performing!) which students may explore under counselor supervision.
Q: What is your attendance policy?
A: Core values of Curio Theatre Camp are collaboration and teamwork - part of this is simply showing up! We highly discourage absences from camp, as each session is designed to culminate in a final showcase performance. Absences detract from our goal of rehearsing and presenting a "Great Story, Well Told!"
Q: What is your cell phone policy?
A: It is our Camp policy to place camper's cell phones and other electronic devices in a secure, locked room for the duration of the camp day. These items will only be made available to your camper during the designated lunch breaks, and they will be returned at the end of the day. Parents/guardians seeking to contact their child during the day will be provided contact information for a Camp staff member.
Q: Does Curio Theatre Camp provide lunch?
A: We do not provide lunches. Each camper is responsible for bringing a labelled lunch, snack, and re-usable water bottle to each day of camp. Food items will be refrigerated. Parents/guardians who make prior arrangement are welcome to drop off lunches for their child. In the event of a serious allergy, Curio Theatre Camp reserves the right to request sensitive food items (such as peanut butter) not be brought to camp.
Q: Does Curio Theatre Camp travel off premises?
A: All Camp activities occur in the Calvary Center for Culture and Community at the intersection of 48th and Baltimore Avenue. Camp activities are held on the Curio Main Stage, in our black box theatre, and in several classrooms throughout the building. All rooms used have HVAC cooling systems.
Q: What should my camper bring with them to camp?
A: In addition to their lunch/water bottle, each camper must wear closed-toed shoes. As camp progresses, your camper may be provided with a script for their final showcase which must be brought with them each day. You may be asked to provide base clothing (generally darker t-shirts and pants) to wear on the performance day.
Q: Is it possible to attend both sessions of camp?
A: Sure! Many of our campers do stay for both. Campers work on completely different projects for each camp.
